COIL (Collaborative Online International Lecture)

What is COIL education?

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the cancellation of study abroad programs. Online classes and meetings using videoconferencing systems such as Zoom and Teams have become routine on college campuses. Meanwhile, the use of videoconferencing systems to connect with students and faculty abroad, known as “COIL Education,” has been attracting attention. COIL is an abbreviation for Collaborative Online International Learning, an educational method that is referred to as an international, interactive, online-based educational method. The faculty of Agriculture has been an early adopter of COIL education on campus, connecting with overseas universities such as Kasetsart University (Thailand) and Vietnam National University of Agriculture.

Advantages of COIL Education

We are developing leaders with an international perspective through joint classes with overseas universities via the Internet. In particular, the program is characterized by collaborative projects in which students work in groups including overseas students, international students, and Japanese students. Working online with foreign students can cause difficulty, but you will feel fulfilled when completing the project. These experiences will be important when you become a member of society.

Group work is facilitated by sharing ideas on the whiteboard at the cloud system.

I am studying smart-agriculture technology. My hobbies are playing the guitar and growing vegetables.

we brainstormed menus using keto diet foods, and even got to try and make them, which was super fun! Completing a project with people from different cultures speaking different languages is difficult, but definitely helps increase communication skills.

I think learning together with people from many different countries can widen your perspective and give you more experience.
Understanding diversity is becoming an important requirement in our lives, more than ever. We need to be able to support each other and solve various problems together. COIL classes are like an international group project, so I’m sure this experience will come in handy!

Talking and having discussions with students from different backgrounds let us hear diverse ideas, which was a fascinating experience. Because of our different nationalities, we got many ideas when brainstorming menus. It was interesting to see the differences there.

This class let me feel what to expect when actually studying abroad. I’m sure this experience will help me in the future. The opportunity to utilize your second language to study new topics and share information will increase, so it will be useful to start using your second language to take specialized classes now.
